The Super Bowl is today and hopefully the Seattle Seahawks will be winning back to back championships. But a couple of weeks ago, the Seahawks were riding the struggle bus in the NFC Championship game. They weren’t able to get any points on the scoreboard until late in the 3rd quarter. Even then it wasn’t my man crush, Russell Wilson, that scored. It was their punter, Jon Ryan, who threw the first touchdown pass. And when he did, he made an amazing face that took the internet by storm. There were a few ways he could have respond after the game. He could get mad that the world was making fun of his incredible moment. He could have ignored it and acted like he didn’t see it. Or he could (and did) do this:
He chose to appreciate the humor in what happened and laughed at himself. Not only did he laugh, but he tweeted and made fun of himself. And he reminded me that sometimes I need to do the same. One time when I was the Youth Director at Charisma I switched up some words while praying. I am not fully convinced this actually happened, but since every youth swears it did, I guess I have to believe them. I thought I said, “God bless us,” but apparently I said, “God breast us.” I didn’t hear the end of that one for a long time. And when they brought it up, I didn’t get mad. I laughed because that is pretty funny.
There will be times in life where I trip up on a word and say something dumb. Or times where I slip and fall. Or any of the other million examples I could give of stupid things I could do. When those moments come, I just need to remember to laugh. I can’t take life so seriously that I miss out on the humor of it. I am going to do dumb things and that is OK. I’ll just follow Jon’s example and remind myself that next time do it better.
What is something really dumb you have done that looking back you laugh about? Leave a comment and let me know!
until next time…
