As I am on this journey to grow in my relationship with God, one thing has been made very clear to me. Simply going through what I deem to be the steps to get closer to God doesn’t guarantee anything. I can ready my Bible, pray, and go to church and still miss out on so many things God has for me.

Taking Thoughts Captive
A few weeks ago, I had one of those days where it seems like everything was just a little off. Nothing majorly went wrong, but there were all kinds of small weird things.
There was one big thing that happened. Once a month, we provide groceries for the after school families in the program I oversee. I started my day by picking up three pallets of groceries that would be packed into boxes for these families. I was driving one of the trucks back to work and I dumped about half a pallet of groceries in the right hand lane of Highway 401 during rush hour traffic. The pallet was packed and wrapped poorly and unfortunately I found out while making a left hand turn (wasn’t going more than 5mph).

Recently in church, we were discussing how church shouldn’t be some kind of social club. We treat church like a club with rules and try to recruit more people to it like it is some kind of holy fraternity. And as members of the church, our main motivation shouldn’t be trying to get more members. Yes, Jesus called us to make disciples. But the definition of a disciple is not someone who goes to church.

Jesus often told the disciples He would make them fishers of men. I’ve often thought of those passages from my framework of fishing. I’d think about casting my line in and seeing what I bring in. But that is not at all how the disciples would have thought about it or what Jesus was saying.
The disciples knew that to fish you would cast your net out, pull the haul into your boat, and then return to shore. Once you got to shore, you would sort out the good fish from the bad fish and junk you had pulled in. This is the framework that Jesus was using when He talked about making fishers of men.

Recently, God has spoken to me about why community is important. It is easy to get caught up in the speed of life and keep to yourself. I have a full-time job, wife, two kids, blog and podcast. With all the responsibilities that come with those, it can fill my schedule. Sometimes it feels like I don’t have time for much else.

A few weeks ago, Angela needed to take Addie to the doctor, so she dropped Zeke off at work with me. It was a Friday, so our after school kids would be playing games in the gym and he could just join in with them. Zeke would have fun and it would make the trip to the doctor with a sick kid easier on Angela. Zeke was running laps around the gym playing with some of the after school kids. Multiple kids came up to me and said, “He just doesn’t stop. He has sooooo much energy.” Every once in a while Zeke would take a break to get a sip of water and then was back up running around the gym. This lasted for about an hour and a half. Even the adults were commenting on how nice it would be to have his energy.
