Cry Out To God

October 6, 2018

A few nights ago, at 1:30am, Angela and I woke up to Zeke screaming, “MOMMY!!!!!!”  As a parent, you know the difference between a cry that needs immediate attention and one that doesn’t.  Knowing something was wrong, Angela jumped out of bed to check on him.  Zeke had a fever and his breathing was very raspy.  Having been through this before, we knew we were probably dealing with croup.  We headed to the emergency room and got him the medicine he needed.  Within minutes of taking the medicine, he was doing much better.

When Zeke woke up and noticed something was wrong, he immediately cried out for Angela and me.  He didn’t sit around and see what he could do about it.  He knew that he needed help and that we could help him.  He wasn’t bashful or shy about it either.  He simply cried out, “Mom, I need help.”

The Bible promises over and over that God will take care of us.  Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”  Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”  1 Peter 5:7 says, “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”  Clearly God wants to take care of us.  So often I ignore this.  I wish I could say that when problems arise, I immediately cry out to God, but that is often not the case.  Even though I know He wants to take care of me and can meet my needs, I usually look for a solution myself.

This past week, I was at work and got an excruciating headache.  It was to the point that I was getting nauseous and was wondering how I was going to get through the day. I told Angela that I would probably take some medicine and lay down when I got home to try to get rid of it.  She asked me if I had prayed about it.  Nope.  I had thought about every other solution other than God.  In that moment, I prayed and commanded the headache to go in the name of Jesus, and then went on about my day.  A couple of hours later, it hit me that I didn’t have a headache anymore.  I should have cried out to God from the start.

Just like Zeke immediately cried out for us when he needed help, I’ve got to call out to God in my moments of need.  I need to get to the place where that is my gut reaction and not trying to think of things on my own.  God will supply and sustain me because He cares about me.

until next time…
