Our society tells us that we have to do everything we can to get ahead. People live and die by the phrase, “Go hard or go home.” I’ll admit that I have been guilty of saying that and doing it. The truth is that isn’t always the best advice. Actually, it is hardly ever good advice. Even God rested on the 7th day. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s better to go home, literally.
A few years ago, I was working three jobs to provide for our family. I felt like it was what I needed to do in order for us to continue to have Angela stay at home with Zeke and still be able to pay the bills. I wasn’t spending much time at the house because I didn’t have any days off. I didn’t think it would be forever, so I was going to go hard until something else came up that I didn’t need to anymore. About a month into working all three jobs, I felt like God was telling me to go home.
I had noble intentions but my priorities were off. Due to the craziness of my schedule, I wasn’t spending much time with God or my family. In fact working all three jobs was my solution to my needs, not God’s. I decided it was time to trust God and let Him provide. I didn’t really know how but I needed to make a change.
The same week I put in my two week notice at one job, Angela was presented with an opportunity to work from home that would cover the income I would be losing. A couple of months later, I received a raise at my full-time job and was able to quit my other job. I was now only working one job and we had more income than when I was working all three.
I am not saying that we should be lazy. The Bible tells us that whatever we do, we should work with all our heart as if we are doing it for God (Col 3:23). When should work hard at the things that God has called us to. At the same time, we need to make sure our priorities are straight. God has clearly told me that I need to be present in my family. Working three jobs didn’t allow for that. When I decided to trust in Him and take steps in that direction, He was able to provide. He has been able to provide in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
It’s great to work hard, as long as we are working towards the things God has called us to.
until next time…
