So I have a confession to make. Well I guess I actually made it in the title of this blog, but I own skinny jeans. At no point in time did I ever think this would happen; until I went on the 2013 Charisma Student Ministry retreat. Following tradition, we stopped on the way home to do some shopping shopping. This year the youth wanted to go to the outlet mall, and I love outlet malls, so I had no problem agreeing with that. Our first stop was Rue 21. I wasn’t really planning to buy any clothes, but they had some really good sales. I thought one of the signs said “Buy one, get one free skinny jeans” for $10. When I saw that, I texted one of my youth to let him know that he should come check it out. I had actually misread the sign and it was buy one, get one for $10, but some of the youth were still interested.
As a joke, I decided to see if they had a pair in my size. It took a little bit of searching, but I was finally able to find a pair. I went to the dressing room to try them on, and to my surprise, they actually fit me and were not impossible to get on. They were also comfortable and kind of stretchy (insert Nacho Libre stretchy pants quote here). I went out of the dressing room to see what everyone thought. My wife Angela was on the fence, but said they looked better than she expected. The youth were all in approval. I was still on the fence, especially since I had no plans of buying any jeans when I walked in the store, especially skinny jeans. Then one of my youth made a comment that sold me. He said, “They make you look younger.” That was all I needed to hear. With Angela giving the final approval, I went to the register to pay for my new skinny jeans.
The two pairs of jeans should have been $35 ($25 + $10 for the second pair), but the register was ringing them up at $10 each. The cashier went to get another pair to try to get them to ring up correctly, but it still said $10 each. Not knowing what else to do, she let me have them at that price. It was a sign from God that I was making the right choice (completely kidding). It was a really cool and unexpected blessing. I ended up paying less for the two pairs than one pair cost.
So yes, I now own skinny jeans. Be on the look-out for the newer, “younger” version of me. I’m sure I’ll catch some flak for my decision, but I’m OK with that. Sometimes you have to make decisions despite what everyone is going to say. Sometime you have to learn to not be set in your ways and open yourself up to new ideas. So you can tell me you love it, tell me you hate it, tell me I’m lame. Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think. However, no matter what you say, it won’t change the fact that I now own skinny jeans.
until next time…
