Taking Thoughts Captive

October 17, 2019

A few weeks ago, I had one of those days where it seems like everything was just a little off.  Nothing majorly went wrong, but there were all kinds of small weird things.

There was one big thing that happened.  Once a month, we provide groceries for the after school families in the program I oversee.  I started my day by picking up three pallets of groceries that would be packed into boxes for these families. I was driving one of the trucks back to work and I dumped about half a pallet of groceries in the right hand lane of Highway 401 during rush hour traffic.  The pallet was packed and wrapped poorly and unfortunately I found out while making a left hand turn (wasn’t going more than 5mph).

Searching For Joy

February 22, 2017

Last week I was driving home from work and sitting at a red light.  Based on the number of cars in front of me, I knew it was going to be a close call for me to make it through the next light cycle.  The light turned green and the cars started to go, except for the one right in front of me.  They were either texting, or checking Facebook, or taking a selfie, but they weren’t paying attention to the stop light.  Finally they started to go, but they weren’t in any rush.  As they approached the light it turned yellow.  There was just enough time for them to make it through and leave me stuck there for another light cycle. Stop Trying To Be Happy

May 15, 2016

I’m sure some of you clicked on the link thinking this has to be clickbait.  No one in their right mind would tell people to stop trying to be happy.  It isn’t clickbait.  That really is the main point of this post.  We all need to stop trying to be happy.  In our culture today we are told that happiness should be the driving force of basically everything we do.  If you are looking for who to marry, you are often told to find someone you are happy with.  When picking a job it should be one that you are happy in.  If you are looking for what college to go to, you need to make sure that you can be happy there.  Same thing for finding a church, deciding where to live, or any other decisions we are trying to make.  Our happiness scale drives our decisions and this is a terrible way to make decisions. Why Worship?

February 19, 2013

In my last post I talked about how God changed my attitude about worship music.  The change is like night and day.  I play in the worship band at church, and honestly I don’t like the weeks when I get a break from playing.  I’d much rather be playing in the band then in the congregation.  My instrument is just another outlet through which I can worship God, and it is an incredible experience to me.  So why do I think worship is so important?  Why do I believe God changed my heart in this matter?  I think worshiping God is the key to unlocking some of the things He has for us.  One of these things is His joy. The Rain Will Come

August 25, 2012

Rain

As of today, it is exactly three weeks until I am going to be married.   A lot of people have been asking me if I am excited.  My answer is that it is one of the only bright spots in the current storm.  I haven’t made a public statement, but if you pay attention on Facebook you may have noticed Trinity Academy is no longer listed as my employer.  Due to budget cuts, I was let go as of last Wednesday.  So exactly one month before I get married, I lose my job. Beauty in the Broken

April 18, 2012

This blog is inspired by the TED talk “The Power of Vulnerability” by Brené Brown. I’d encourage you to watch the video, but be warned it is twenty minutes long. You don’t have to watch the video for the blog to be meaningful, so I understand if you would rather not. [Read more…] about Beauty in the Broken
