Recently in church, we were discussing how church shouldn’t be some kind of social club. We treat church like a club with rules and try to recruit more people to it like it is some kind of holy fraternity. And as members of the church, our main motivation shouldn’t be trying to get more members. Yes, Jesus called us to make disciples. But the definition of a disciple is not someone who goes to church.

No Excuses
When I was in high school, I spent the night a a friend’s house. In the middle of the night we snuck out of his house. We were drinking, smoking, and doing stupid stuff (like all that dumb stuff you see people on your neighborhood Facebook complain about). A few hours later, we walked in the door and his dad was sitting on the stairs just inside the door. I’m pretty sure my mouth hit the floor and I turned as white as a ghost. We were busted. All the evidence was in the backpack we were wearing. There was nothing we could do to lie about where we were or what we had done.

If you know me, you know that I am a huge sports fan. Unfortunately this has caused me more pain than joy, but I’m a dedicated fan so I am not giving up on my teams. About the only thing good the Miami Dolphins did this year was the “Miracle in Miami” when they beat the Patriots on a last second Hail Mary/Lateral play. NC State is so known for last second heroics they are known as the “Cardiac Pack.” One day I may have to get a prescription for blood pressure medicine because of the stress watching an NC State game can bring.
